Language and culture assistants are placed in schools all across Spain. During the school year, they collaborate in world language classes through activities that improve listening and speaking skills as well as socio-cultural awareness of students.
Language and Culture Assistants in Spain Program Information
Read how to become a language assistant:
- Be a New Zealand citizen.
- Be aged 18 – 45.
- Have a university degree or be currently enrolled as a 2nd year student.
- Have excellent health and private health insurance.
- Submit a signed Sworn Declaration of knowledge and acceptance of the requirements of the language assistants program.
- Submit a signed Statement of Purpose.
- Submit a letter of recommendation written by a professor or employer and dated no earlier than September 1, 2025.
- Provide a clean Certificate of Sexual Offences. This certificate may be required at any stage of the process (renewals must request the certificate directly from the Spanish police).

Here is an example of the Spain English Teaching Assistant working conditions:
- Regional Placement: Asturias, Canarias, Ceuta, Melilla, Navarra or Valenciana.
- Program Conditions
- Schedule: 14 hours per week
- Age limit: 18-45 (new candidates)
- Length of the program: November 1 – May 31
- Stipend: €800-€935 per month
- Health insurance: Is included
- Or your own private medical insurance.

To find out the regions that are participating in the program (2026-2027):
Language and culture assistants will receive a monthly stipend of 800 euros as an allowance towards room and board. For some regional education offices, the allowance may be higher and accordingly, the number of hours in the classroom will increase. Language assistants are expected to dedicate 14 – 16 hours a week towards classroom collaboration at their schools.
