The Kiwis taking craft beer to Spain article by our very own Sam Mythen
When Tony Culmer met Trish Wills at Hallertau Brewery in Auckland’s Riverhead, he warned her that he was a craft beer snob. Trish, however, didn’t know much about craft beer. She joked her choice would be a Lion Red at the local.
Pale ale in hand, Tony grinned at Trish and asked: “Do you want to go see the world?”
A year later, they were backpacking in Cuba.
It’s the couple’s ninth anniversary this year, and August will be the anniversary of their own craft beer bar, which they run together in Málaga, Spain.
They first visited the Spanish city in 2022, on a winter break from their canal boat home in France. The only thing they knew about Málaga was that the All Whites played there in the 1982 World Cup finals.
“Then we realised, hey, this place is great, we could live here!” Tony said. “It felt like home in a way.”
On the train back to France, a country where they struggled to find ‘good craft beer,’ Trish started thinking about bars, a long-time dream they shared.
She turned to Tony and asked: “What about Málaga for the bar?” Two weeks later, they were back in the Costa del Sol town, hunting for a home for their dream.
Tony had been drinking craft beer since the early 2000s. “I got tired of drinking slop, and back then, there weren’t many craft beer options in New Zealand,” he said.
As a member of the now-defunct Society of Beer Advocates, Tony joined other “beer geeks” around the country, making homebrew and supporting brewers, like the Yeastie Boys, who quickly became craft beer staples on the New Zealand scene. “We advocated for the craft beer industry, and it became more popular throughout the country. Now it’s astronomical,” he said.
With Málaga’s Old Town a prime location for real estate, it took the couple a years to find their bar. It’s a nightmare running a business in Spain, they said, regardless of whether you speak the language. “We didn’t know the culture, we didn’t know the ways of doing business. We didn’t know the context,” Trish said. “It’s been a huge learning curve, and we’re still learning as we go.”
But they were confident their bar would succeed.
Their vision is: To celebrate New Zealand culture and promote good beer. “Once we put our minds to something, we do it,” Trish said.
Kiwi House of Beer Malaga opened in August last year. Posters don the walls describing the dictionary definitions of Kiwi slang and translations of the Māori language. A plush kiwi, gifted by a local Spanish couple, watches over the bar.
On tap, you’ll find Basqueland Brewing, the first Spanish craft beer they tried. There’s also Malandar’s Paradise, an Andalusian beer featuring a Kiwi hop. Tony explained that northern Spain’s craft beer industry is more developed, but it’s still a growing market in the south.
