A reminder about what Waitangi Day represents for Kiwis in Spain.
Waitangi Day, observed on 6 February, is New Zealand’s national day. It commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) in 1840 between the British Crown and various Māori chiefs. The treaty is considered the founding document of New Zealand, establishing British sovereignty while promising Māori rights to their lands, resources, and cultural identity.
Significance and Observance
- Official public holiday: It is a public holiday across New Zealand.
- Ceremonies and events: The main official celebrations take place at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, where the treaty was first signed. These include wānanga (discussions), cultural performances, and political speeches.
- Protests and activism: Some Māori and supporters use the day to highlight issues related to land rights, treaty breaches, and indigenous sovereignty.
