A Rare Phenomenon Found on Select Beaches Worldwide

While many have heard of glowing beaches, few have had the opportunity to see them in person. Bioluminescence is commonly associated with exotic destinations like the Maldives, but it’s actually much closer than you might think. Galicia – Beaches in Spain

On Spain’s northern coast, Galicia is renowned for its Mar de Ardora a term used locally to describe bioluminescent waters. The phenomenon is most common in the summer months, especially along the Costa da Morte. Here, the bioluminescence primarily caused by the microorganism Noctiluca scintillans becomes more visible with stronger waves and lower levels of light pollution.

Its stunning beaches offer a double dose of natural beauty: sparkling sands by day, and glowing waters by night. The most notable location here is:

Murcia – Beaches in Spain

Although less predictable, Murcia has occasionally seen displays of bioluminescent waters, especially due to phytoplankton blooms. The most common sightings occur around Playa de Águilas, though other areas along the Mar de Águilas coastline may also offer glimpses of this glowing display, if you’re lucky.
