Earlier this month, we got to chat with Bernie to find out what brought him to Spain and all about his life here in Spain. A big thanks to Bernie for taking the time to chat with us, we can’t wait to see what else you achieve.
Rugby Star – Bernie Muaiava Taulealo
What brought you to Spain? How long have you been here for?
I have been here for almost 4 years, living in Valencia. I was brought over here to play rugby.
What is it like to play rugby in a country where it is not the most popular or dominating sport?
It’s awesome! I get to contribute to the game I love by inspiring young kids to play rugby, which will help develop confidence in themselves and their abilities. I fell in love with the game again and I genuinely believe that it’s more than just a sport.
What were the biggest culture shocks you’ve noticed both on and off the field?
Here you’re obliged to wear a headgear from U5s-U18s, which was definitely a shock to see. The biggest culture shock off the field for me, is how late people eat e.g dinner is usually between 9pm-11pm.
Do you have any advice for those looking to do what you do?
Take the opportunity to play rugby abroad. It’ll help you grow as a player and as an individual. It’s also a good way to see the world, countries you’d never thought you’d experience.
