The complete America’s Cup Barcelona 2024 schedule for the 37th Cup was confirmed in January. With competitive sailing taking place from the end of August to October 21 in Barcelona.
The Kiwi Cup defenders will not only face off against the other five syndicates (American Magic, Britannia, Luna Rossa, French Orient Express, and Swiss Alinghi) in the round-robin of the challenger series but also in the third preliminary regatta, which resumes racing in August.
Although Team NZ’s points won’t count towards the match race, the first round-robin essentially serves as an eliminator for the five challengers. The team finishing last will be eliminated from contention for the Auld Mug.
The remaining four will then compete in the semifinals, with the winners advancing to the challenger series final for the opportunity to challenge Team NZ in the decisive match race from October 12-21.
Adding an unusual twist to the challenger semifinals, the top qualifier will get to choose their opponent for the race, creating an intriguing psychological challenge.
The chosen team might perceive this selection as a challenge to their racing prowess, potentially motivating them to defeat the syndicate that picked them as the preferred competitor.
Meanwhile, the top qualifier gains the advantage of knowing which team they are most likely to beat to advance to the final.
Team NZ’s participation in the challenger series is not unprecedented, as Cup defenders competing have happened before. Oracle Team USA did so in 2017, with one point counting towards the match race they ultimately lost against the Kiwis in Bermuda.
Since then, Team NZ has held onto the Auld Mug, winning it in Auckland in 2021. They secured victory in the second preliminary event of the latest Cup cycle last December in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, after finishing second to American Magic in the opening regatta last September in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain.
These preliminary events featured each team racing their AC40 boats, but they are now gearing up to unveil their larger AC75 models for the Cup racing ahead.
Additionally, this year’s America’s Cup events in Barcelona will include both youth and women’s competitions, starting in September.
